Unleashing the insurance sector’s potential for long-term sustainable investment: How can the Solvency II Review help ensure the right EU policy framework?

On Thursday 3rd of February 2022, the Sustainable, Long-term investments & Competitive European Industry Intergroup in the European Parliament held its online conference on “Unleashing the insurance sector’s potential for long-term sustainable investment: How can the Solvency II Review help ensure the right EU policy framework?“. Chaired by MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, Renew, and overseen by John Berrigan, Director-General of Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union, European Commission and MEP Markus Ferber, European People’s Party, this event focused on how the EU policy framework, in particular the review of the Solvency II Directive, the Capital Markets Union Action Plan and the Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy allow this sector to unleash its maximum potential to deliver on European objectives. The panel discussion was moderated by Pr. Karel Van Hulle, KU Leuven & the Goethe University.

Context: Insurance companies play a major role in the real economy while contributing to its resilience. Their investment capacity is geared towards the real economy and contributes to the economic recovery as well as the long-term financing of European businesses, including SMEs and infrastructures. In the context of the Covid-19 recovery and the persistent need for long-term investment in the green and digital transitions, this conference will focus on how the EU policy framework, in particular the review of the Solvency II Directive, the Capital Markets Union Action Plan and the Renewed Sustainable Finance Strategy allow this sector to unleash its maximum potential to deliver on European objectives.
